(Farmer Shri Gajanan Ghatekar's suicide note)

The non-receipt of declared  relief aid to vidarbha cotton even after lapse of four month and sudden crash in cotton prices due on going stringent restriction on cotton export ,three more vidarbha farmers suicides reported today  include one woman farmer ,they are identified as

1.Gajanan Thorat  of Village Garm Mahsal a in Karanja taluka of Washim

2.Kamalabai chavan  of Village Wadner in Kelapur of Yavatmal

3.Gajanan Ghotekar  of Village Kothoda in Kelapur  of  Yavatmal,

informed farm activist Kishore Tiwari   of Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti VJAS,

Maharashtra Govt. declared relief aid to cotton farmers of vidarbha in last December 2011 to the tune Rs.2000 crore but till today not single paisa has been  paid to distressed farmers more over suddenly union Govt. Of India on 4^th March   impose the blanket ban on cotton export then imposing srigent conditions of cotton export has severely affected the raw  cotton rates  was traded above @Rs.4200/- quintal but after the  export ban brought down @Rs.3400 quintal ,this is reason  to give trigger to restarting farm suicide spiral in vidarbha, Tiwari added.

Deceased farmer Shri Gajanan Ghatekar’s suicide note:

“My tractor was old, it cost me a lot for repairing. My loan account is repayments are delayed, all gold ornaments are sold off. I’m bankrupt, my crop loan is delayed. I’m helpless and very upset so committing suicide. I couldn’t get my daughter married. Please save my family. Don’t vote Congress ad NCP and don’t let your situation to become like me, they will ruin our nation.”

“That was last request made by Gajanan Ghotekar ,cotton farmer of  village kothoda in kelapur taluka of yavatmal district who committed suicide on 19^th April night to mounting debt of bank taken for the tractor and non-payment of installments, police has recovered this suicide note from Ghotekar’s  family members  and verifying it’s  hand writing but in last five years lot of suicides notes of cotton farmers who committed suicides alleging state driven wrong policies are recovered but administration failed to take corrective action” Tiwari added.

In India 7 million cotton farmers families cultivating cotton in 12 million hectors from states of  Maharashtra ,Gujrat,AP,MP,Rajthan and Punjab who are in debt trap due to cotton crop failure this year and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar has been demanding UPA Govt. to remove all barriers of export in Agri. Products  which is being supported by Maharashtra Chief Minister Prathiraj Chavan, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy but corrupt cartel of commerce ministry has managed to continue the anti-farmer policies which is being reflected in farmers suicides of vidarbha ,our all protest and requisitions are shown dustbin ,this is mouch more humiliating” Tiwari informed.

“All earlier GOM meeting have been high-jacked and Babus involved commerce Ministry and Cotton Advisory Board CAB has been giving fabricated data of national cotton consumption and production  to justify the restrictions imposed for cotton export which are not in line with ground reality .We are till confused to understand the justification to protect finger counting people by pushing more than 10 million agrarian in deep economical crisis ” Tiwari added.

“When Indian domestic demand is just 20 million bales as against national production of 33 million bales there is no reason put restrictions when interest of domestic textile mills are fully protected. The decision to ban Indian cotton export is another example rampant corruption going on in UPA Govt. there is big names involved in the sudden export ban will expose the all misdeeds of commerce ministry hence for the first time farmers suicide issue has given focus of wrong policies of state ,we will see that the truth is prevailed”  Tiwari added.

Note: Why am I taking efforts to reproduce this post so openly? Reason: My farther also sowed 3 acres of cotton. In that first he was cheated by seed company due to which the production was meager, after that government banned export of cotton without even asking any objections from farmers. Then middlemen took disadvantage and made the prices fall from Rs.4500/quintol to Rs.3500/quintol causing more unrest. Finally government declared package of Rs.2000 per acre for deceased farmers, but that needed Rs.200 per hectare for registering the claim. And what can be expected from this incompetent and corrupt government we haven’t received a single paisa as of now.

कापूस उत्पादक शेतक-यांना राज्य सरकारने जाहीर केलेली नुकसानभरपाई चार महिन्यांनंतरही न मिळाल्याने हताश झालेल्या यवतमाळमधील दोन आणि वाशिममधील एका शेतक-याने गुरुवारी रात्री आत्महत्या केली. यात एका महिलेचाही समावेश आहे. आत्महत्येपूर्वी एका शेतक-याने ‘काँग्रेस-राष्ट्रवादीला मतदान करू नका’ असे पत्र लिहिल्याने आणखी खळबळ उडाली आहे.

वाशिम जिल्ह्यातील कारंजा तालुक्यातील मासळ येथील गजानन थोरात, यवतमाळ जिल्ह्यातील केळापूर तालुक्यातील वडनेर येथील कमलाबाई चव्हाण आणि याच तालुक्यातील कोठोडा गावातील गजानन घोटेकर या तिघांनी वेगवेगळ्या घटनांत गुरुवारी रात्री आत्म्हत्या केली.

हे तिघेही कापूसउत्पादक होते व त्यांनी कर्जबाजारीपणामुळे आत्महत्या केल्याचे विदर्भ जनआंदोलन समितीचे किशोर तिवारी यांनी सांगितले. गेल्या वर्षी निर्यातबंदीमुळे कापसाच्या किमती अचानक ढासळल्यामुळे कापूस उत्पादकांना झालेल्या नुकसानापोटी दोन हजार कोटींचे पॅकेज देण्याची घोषणा राज्य सरकारने डिसेंबर २०११मध्ये केली होती. मात्र, त्याला चार महिने लोटल्यानंतरही मदत मिळाली नाही. त्यातच केंद्र सरकारने पुन्हा निर्यातबंदी लागू केल्याने या शेतक-यांनी आत्महत्या केली, असे तिवारी म्हणाले.

व्यथित शेतकरी कै. गजानन घोटेकर यांच्या मृत्युपूर्व पत्राचा मजकूर:

“माझा ट्रॅक्टर जुना होता. त्याच्यासाठी रिपेरिंगला खूप खर्च आला. माझं खातं थकीत झालं, सोनंनाणं विकलं गेलं. मी कर्जबाजारी झालो, माझं ग्रामिण बँकेचं पीककर्ज थकीत झालं. मी बेजार झाल्याने आत्महत्या करत आहे. माझ्या मुलीचे लग्न मी करू शकलो नाही. माझ्या कुटुंबाला वाचवा. काँग्रेस व राष्ट्रवादी काँग्रेसला मतदान करू नका व माझ्यासारखी स्थिती निर्माण होऊ देऊ नका. ते देशाला बरबाद करतील.”

सूचना: हे वृत्त जाहीरपणे पुनर्प्रकाशित करण्याचे कारण म्हणजे माझ्या वडिलांनीसुद्धा ३ एकर कपाशीची लागवड केली होती. त्यामध्ये त्यांना पहिल्यांदा कपाशीच्या बियाणांमध्ये फसविले त्यामुळे उत्पादन अगदी क्षुल्लक झाले, नंतर सरकारने निर्यात बंदी केली, मग मध्यस्थ टग्यांनी  (व्यापारी/अडती) भाव पडून उरल्या मालाची वाताहत केली, आणि जेव्हा सरकारने नुकसान भरपाई जाहीर केली तेव्हा अर्ज दाखल करून घेण्यासाठी हेक्टरी २०० रुपये घेतले. आणि नुकसान भरपाई तरी किती तर केवळ एकरी २००० रुपये. आणि कहर म्हणजे अजून पर्यंत कसलीही भरपाई मिळाली नाही.

- Six vidarbha Farmer Suicides reported in last two days due to Drought :VJAS urged Indian Agri. Minister Sharad Pawar to look at dying (read killing of) vidarbha farmers in place of IPL-3 Cricket .

Vidarbha farmers suicide spiral is likely to restart after the MH State Govt. declared drought in 14,059 villages in vidarbha due to complete crop failure that has increased despondency and gloom as six more farm suicides reported in last two days in west vidarbha ,three are from yavatmal district ,two from akola and one from wardha ,these are district which are covered under mega multi thousand crore Prime Minister Relief Package being implemented sine july-2006, informed Kishore Tiwari of Vidarbha Janandolan Samiti in press note .

The innocent farmers who killed themselves in last two days are due to vidarbha agrarian crisis

1. Chandu rathode of mohdari in Yavatmal
2. Gajanan manchelwar of pandharkawada in Yavatmal
3. Gajanan wankhede of Asara in Yavatmal
4. Vinod kale from Nindipeth in Akola
5. Manoj more of unkhed in Akola
6. Raju bobde of sawli wagh in Wardha

Recetaly maharashtra Govt. has declared more than 140000 villages of vidarbha as drought hit after last Anewari (crop yield estimate) given administration has been shown around 45% that’s complete loss cotton crop in the region.
As per administration reports these villages have been facing following problems
1. Water,
2. Fodder,
3. Food and
4. Employment
Even after these problems till date not a single district administration has started relief work. This is resulting in migration of thousands of farmers in search of work and food. Ground condition is worst than June-2006 and now it’s time for Indian prime minister to revisit the Vidarbha in order to take review of his relief package,Tiwari urged.

VJAS urged Indian Agri. Minister Sharad Pawar to look at dying vidarbha farmers in place of IPL-3 Cricket.

Vidarbha Janandolan Samiti in letter to faxed today to agriculture minister sharad to pay attention to the severe agrarian crisis of maharashtra and spare some time from his busy schedule of IPL-3 cricket.

It has long pending demand of vidarbha dying farmers to have fulltime Agriculture Minister who can attend issues of free health care, food security, rural employment, fodder to save dying cattle ,drinking water to rural masses and cattle on priority basis so that prevailing acute distress can be minimize and farmers suicides can be controlled,Tiwari said.

I urge to BJP, Shivsena and MNS leaders please set up a fight against government policies in order to bring in the changes needed to resolve to farmer crisis. This issue is far more important, morally correct and importantly politically correct. Also it is far better than fighting against MNIK-My Name Is Khan (carry on that too with your wish but consider this one too).
Dear Congress leaders please pay attention to this matter as well. Will earn you more votes and respect in “aam aadami” (if aam aadami’s definition includes farmers too). No one would threaten/hurt Rahul Gandhi for sure if he takes some steps to solve this problem.

When will all this stop? Can we do something?
Can we propose solution to this matter with some rigorous discussions? I think we can. Then lets offer some solution.

Here is what I think:
1. Survey the water resources, soil quality in these areas.
2. Solve the problem of food and drinking water on priority.
3. Stop BT Cotton seed and promote traditional seed.
4. Raise the minimum support prise for cotton, soyabin, onion, sugarcane…
5. Offer insurance at minimum premium to farmers with every loan
6. Make arrangements local Krishi Market at each taluka level.
7. Eliminate the dalals or bring in transparency.
8. Set up separate department for organic fertilizers development
